James R Morris was born and raised in Owens Valley, California. His family has lived in the region for several generations. During his childhood, he lived in verious Owens Valley communities, including Olancha, Lone Pine, Bishop, and Independence.
He also spent summers in the mountains with local ranching families. During those years, he heard firsthand accounts from people who had knowledge of the historical events that later became part of this novel’s background.
Morris later attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Business Administration, and a PhD in finance. He taught finance at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Houston, and the University of Colorado Denver. He retired as Professor Emeritus.
In his academic career, Morris has written numerous professional and academic articles in finance. He is also the author of three textbooks on financial modeling:
